| The area of London
directly around Piccadilly, with Piccadilly Circus at its centre, is
considered by many to be the centre of London. It is therefore most
appropriate that piccadilly
press takes its name from
this famous site, because it represents the 21st century centre of the
childrens' book publishing world. In its heyday in the 17th century, this area was one of the most fashionable and exclusive parts of the city. Now, as a traffic hub and neon-lit gathering place, Piccadilly Circus attracts visitors from around the world, many of whom sprawl on the steps of its stone island, which is crowned by the 1893 aluminium statue of Eros (formally entitled the Angel of Christian Charity), built as a memorial to Anthony Cooper, the 7th earl of Shaftesbury by Alfred Gilbert). The intersection's first electric advertisements appeared in 1910, and from 1923 giant electric billboards were set up on the facade of the London Pavilion, which was a theatre at that time. Many of the surrounding buildings were redeveloped to house retail shops in the 1980s. The 19th-century Criterion building was restored in the early 1990s. The bustling "Circus" remains one of London's most important meeting-points. It is said if you hang around long enough, you will meet everyone you know. |
